Lunch at school and gardening as part of our school curriculum

 

Lunch time is one of our most important differential traits. Having lunch at school does not represent the simple fact of eating, but it is part of our so-called Social Life at school. This event of the day has an impact on evolutionary aspects at personal, social and cultural level, as well as promote health habits, well-being, respect, autonomy and personal initiative. On the other hand, planting and gardening makes students aware of the importance of improving nutrition quality of the daily diet, based on fresh products. In addition, gardening as a crosscurricular subject allows students develop different competences and significant knowledge.

 

Biography

Montse Figuera has been a teacher at secondary school Garbi Pere Vergés (Barcelona) for more that twelve years. Fundació Escoles Garbí is an organisation managing two schools with 2000 students from 4 to 18. Both schools share a common educational project promoting active learning and based on the ideology of the founder Pere Vergés, who fostered innovative pedagogy at the beginning of 20th Century. In both schools, teachers and students participate actively in the smooth running of the school to educate competent, committed and responsible citizens by means of project-based learning.

Montse is a teacher of foreign languages, as well as the coordinator of Erasmus projects and linguistic exchanges. But she is above all- like any teacher at school- part of the project, being actively involved in the life-based teaching-learning process.
